Selling an ebook online is a fantastic way to get your home based business off to an amazing (and profitable) start!
One thing before we move on...
Please promise you won't laugh at me after you read this entire story. Seriously, I made plenty of mistakes and you'll probably think I'm some kind of idiot for doing what I did.
Maybe, you'll respect me for telling you about all of my embarrassing mistakes.
You'll just have to spend the next couple minutes reading to find out...
Ok, let's get started...
In the summer of 2005 I decided to do a little research on selling my very own ebook. You should know that I didn't have a clue how I was going to do it or even if I could do it. Even if I could write it myself, there is still the entire challenge of selling the darn thing.
With all those questions in mind I still wanted to give it a try. After all, selling an ebook online would be a great way to really start my home based business.
First question I asked myself:
Right away my brain snapped into action and gave me an answer: "You can Google search 'how to write an ebook' and try to find a few great resources of information."
So, I did just that. What I found was pretty amazing; A couple of ebooks called "How To Write & Publish Your Own Ebook In 7 Days" and "Ebook Secrets Exposed!" Cool right? After all, I knew that writing an ebook would take some time, but I had no idea it could be done in only 7 days!
I'm sure that's all you would need to get started, but I was terrified of writing at the time. "Besides, I'm a web designer, not a writer" I thought.
Unhappy with that answer (even though writing an ebook in 7 days would be a small miracle,) I asked the second question:
"Ask and you shall receive" - That's the truest statement in all the universe and here's proof; After I asked the second question, I instantly remembered an article I had read in Business 2.0 (which you should be reading anyway!).
This article talked about how many internet entrepreneurs are "flipping" websites, just like real estate pros "flip" homes.
Basically, you buy an existing domain name, website and ebook (or other product). Spend a few months upgrading the website and increasing the sales and then sell the darn thing for more than you bought it for. AND they even listed this website called www.SitePoint.com where all this happens.
"YES!" I got my answer and all I had to do was ask 2 simple questions.
I went to SitePoint.com and dove into the Marketplace. - Jackpot!
There was an endless supply of existing websites for sale. And all of them have some sort of money making potential. I was amazed by the variety of websites and the prices! Everything from $100 to $75,000!
You could spend an afternoon just looking at all the ebook websites for sale... And I did.
In fact, I checked the website several times a day to see if any new ebook websites were posted. Hey, I was motivated and inspired at the time.
After a week or so, the perfect affiliate ebook website fell into my lap. An existing website, a kick butt domain name, a pile of 10 ebooks on affiliate marketing AND full resell rights to the main ebook of the bunch.
3.7 seconds later, the website was mine!
I threw down a measly $400 for the chance at affiliate ebook gold! Finally, I had my very own affiliate ebook and website too. It really was a hot deal.
$400 may seem like a lot of money for a website, but for me it was a steal. The way I see it, that $400 saved me AT LEAST one stressful, sleepless month of miserable writing. Remember, I hated writing my name at that point.
Yes, you're right.
You're thinking "You can write an ebook in just 7 days with help. AND you can use that system to write 4 ebooks in the next month, build yourself 4 websites with affiliate programs to sell the ebooks and you'd be swimming in cash!"
So I guess the $400 saved me only 7 days. Even if, I only got 1 ebook out of it I was still happy.
Now comes the real challenge, editing the ebook and making it MINE!
